Five More Things… For Your Weekend…

When you watch Football on your Fridays, you can easily divide the season into three equally important parts… non-region schedule, region schedule, and playoffs…

The first gets you ready for the second which gets you ready for the third…

And if you look at the Roswell schedule (since they’re the immediate example of being on our air this Friday night- a little before 8PM on GPB and gpb.org), it’s a really tough schedule out of the gate: Tonight against Collins Hill, Peachtree Ridge, at Norcross, and at Walton without a bye week.

Talking to head coach Justin Sanderson, he knows that, and his players know that, too. But they look forward to seeing where the team is since they only return 8 starters. The Hornets went 1-3 last year before their furious run to the playoffs- and a loss to new rival Collins Hill.

Should be interesting to see where things stand after Week One…

Now, onto the five Friday Things…

As always, in no particular order…

First Friday Thing…

The non-region schedule for this week is outrageous: Baldwin-Burke, Brunswick-Statesboro, East St. Louis-North Gwinnett, Swainsboro-ECI, and Tucker-SWD are just starters in the whole menu…

Seriously, find a game, or three since games are on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday thanks to Hurricane Irene, and get strapped in for a great weekend.

Second Friday Thing…

Kudos to the University of Louisville…

Coffee County’s hopes this season in Region 1-5A were going to be wrapped around their QB, Will Gardner. In the 28-6 win over Brunswick, Gardner tore his ACL and is gone for the season. The Cardinals are still honoring Gardner’s commitment after this season is over…

Nicely done, Charlie Strong.

Third Friday Thing…

Remember we had the Brunswick-Statesboro game on the watch list…???
Here’s a guy to watch on the watch list…

Statesboro junior RB Dequan Daniels rushed for 1,703 yards and 21 touchdowns last season - including 702 yards and 10 TDs in four playoff games. Statesboro lost 22-21 in the semifinals to Chattahoochee and beat Brunswick twice last season…

Fourth Friday Thing…

Thomson’s Bulldogs travel to Tiger Field to take on Washington-Wilkes. It’ll be the first game for new Thomson head coach Milan Turner as he assumes the role after the retirement and passing of coaching legend Luther Welsh. Turner knows that he’s not there to replace Welsh, since you can’t replace Welsh, but he hopes to continue the legacy that he started.

Washington-Wilkes has three recent college grad and Shorter University football players Jacob Kelley and Muhammad Abdellatif, at offensive and defensive coordinators, and recent grad T.C. Jay as a position coach. More than two-dozen Hawks are coaching in the high school ranks in Georgia this season. Says a lot about what the Hawks coaching staff has done in a short time for playing and coaching… led by head coach, and all-around good guy, Phil Jones...

Fifth Friday Thing…

To the handful of teams that are starting anew in the GHSA and to the schools from the GISA that are starting their time in the GHSA- schools now numbering over 400- good luck to all of you this week… and we’ll see how you did come Sunday…

Play it safe everyone, I’ll talk to you soon…
