It was homecoming all around the state last weekend. A lot of folks were crowned kings and queens across football fields and it was a cool time for parents and their sons and daughters.

Oh, let us know if you have any homecoming pictures or videos that you would like to share on our Facebook page over at “GPB Sports.” We would love to share them and let you tell us about your experiences last Friday. I think I went to homecoming as an 8th grader and that was it…Never nominated for any kind of court and never really had a car to travel to a game in until I was out of college, so I watched TV on Fridays.

How about y’all? Just thought I would ask…

Now, to the football part. What would you have though If I had told you in the preseason that by Week 7, A) Carrollton would have four losses B) Camden County would have two Region 1-6A losses C) Statesboro would finally win a game after starting the season with five losses? Those of you who thought after early season defeats that Norcross and North Gwinnett would be back strong as normal and that Lanier would be 6-0--what would think about all that?

Once again, faithful reader, what surprises you the most to date? Let me know and I will post the responses here for next week’s column.

Now for the highlights. Let’s start down South in Region 1-6A where Valdosta’s defense is strong against Tift County. Jake is in the “Locker Room…”

How about Hawkinsville in Central Georgia staying undefeated by knocking off Dooly County? The highlights below set up a BIG match-up with Marion to decide the region title, probably, as we move forward. And that gives you, at least, one home game in the playoffs. Frank and Ben are in shorts to deliver the highlights.

Now, it’s never bad for the right kind of frenzy. The lead in Savannah had a lot of dramatic subtext if you have followed the Demetris Robertson story involving Savannah Christian and Calvary Day this season down there. They squared off in a game that will probably be round one of a playoff game re-match down the line. Frank and Stefanie have the highlights and everything else from the coastal empire and low country.

What is high school football without the proper amount of tailgating and a chili cook-off? Chris Porter and the Team Sideline guys take you to Ware County and Glynn Academy for the cooking before the game gets cooking (at the 5:45 mark.)

A tip of the hat to a couple of performances before we go. Devin Collins of Pepperell set a new record with 485 yards rushing in a 34-32 loss to Rockmart, beating the old Don Calloway-Macon County record of 476 from 1999. And Hillgrove tailback Sonny Harris ran for 8TD’s in Hillgrove’s 72-46 win over North Paulding. Congrats to you and your teams for clearing the way all night long.
