A former boxing champion and Georgia native was killed over the weekend.

Vernon Forrest was shot several times in an apparent robbery Saturday night in Atlanta. Police continue to look for suspects in the case.

The 38-year-old Forrest was a native of Augusta. His boxing career included being a member of the 1992 Olympic team. Later in his pro career, he became champion of the WBC’s super welterweight division. He had reclaimed the WBC 154-pound title with a victory just last September.
