At least 8 people were arrested today during a protest at an immigration detention center in rural Georgia. They were demanding the closure of the Stewart County Detention Center.

About 70 protesters called for the closure of the private prison in West Georgia which houses detainees for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Protesters also called for the release of Pedro Guzman. His family says he’s been held there for more than a year and has an American wife.

As an Act of civil disobedience, some protesters crossed onto the property of the prison and were arrested says Azadeh Shahshahani with the Georgia ACLU.

"7 Individuals including Pedro’s mother in law decided to cross the line," she says.

The Stewart County Sheriff says they were charged with criminal trespass and released on bond.
