The temperature in Atlanta broke the record low for the date and some north Georgia schools were closed as a cold spell continued across the state.

Schools in Fannin, Gilmer, Pickens, Rabun, Towns and Union County are closed Tuesday. Roads remain icy across north Georgia, making highway driving treacherous.

The early-morning temperature in Atlanta dropped to 14 degrees, breaking the old record low of 15 for Dec. 14, set in 1917. Gainesville and Marietta also reported 14 degrees at 8 a.m., while Valdosta reported 23 and Savannah 21. Warmer temperatures are expected later in the week.
