The executive director of the Georgia Council for the Arts has resigned. Susan Weiner, who was appointed by former Gov. Sonny Perdue in 2004, announced her resignation Wednesday night.

In a news release, Weiner said she resigned after making an assessment of the goals and objectives of the agency.

Gov. Nathan Deal has proposed moving the arts council from the governor's office to the Georgia Department of Economic Development.

Deal's proposed fiscal 2012 budget cuts the GCA's funding from $790,735 this year to $566,730.

Weiner served as mayor of Savannah from 1992 to 1995.
