On Tuesday the Macon City Council upheld Macon Mayor Robert Reichart's veto on a recent smoking ban in public areas.

The proposal would have limited smoking in all most public places, including bars and restaurants.

While the City Council voted nine to six to overturn the veto, it fell short of the ten votes needed to overturn Mayor Robert Reichart’s decision.

In his defense of the veto, Councilman Mike Cranford described the bill as “atrocious” and said it “infringed on individual rights.”

No further plans to take up the smoking ban have been announced
