City officials have approved plans for Great Dane Trailers to build a research and development center in Savannah.

The Savannah Morning News reported Tuesday that the company proposed the new site plan at Tuesday's Chatham County-Savannah Metropolitan Planning Commission meeting.

The plans include a two-building research and development center, a truck simulator and a new office building. The company could not be reached for comment on the project, but the newspaper reports it will likely result in new jobs.

Great Dane, a Savannah-based manufacturer of freight trailers, has operated on a 15-acre property since 1919.

The company announced in August 2010 that it would build a new plant near Statesboro that would employ more than 400 workers.
