A settlement may be in the works for a class-action lawsuit addressing poor Georgians' access to a public defender.

The trial scheduled to start Thursday is cancelled.

At issue is whether Georgia meets federal requirements to adequately provide legal counsel for indigent defendants.

The Southern Center for Human Rights claims the state agency that provides legal representation for poor clients is “inadequately staffed and funded.”

The organization is representing 200 indigent defendants.

A representative from the Center stated no further comment is possible during the settlement discussions.
