The Georgia Senate has approved legislation that could make the optional "In God We Trust" decals for state license plates free.

Senate Bill 293 was passed by a vote of 48-3. It would also end the requirement for license plates to display a county decal and would make them optional.

Currently, Georgia drivers have the option of adding the religious decal to the car tag for an additional dollar.

The license plate bill comes after the state had to re-do a public contest last year because "In God We Trust" appeared on possible designs without making it clear the motto was a sticker and not permanent.
