Starting in July, Georgia residents who need to renew, reinstate or apply for a Georgia driver's license or state ID card will have to do it in person.

The launch of the Secure ID program was announced Tuesday. The governor's office says the program further ensures the integrity of driver's licenses and identification cards.

Beginning July 1, customers will need to go to a Department of Driver Services customer service center and present their original identification documents. They will have to prove their identity, Social Security number and residential address.

Already people have to provide these documents when applying for their first license or ID card. Now they will also have to do so for renewals and reinstatements.

Current licenses and ID cards will remain valid until their expiration date.
