Chatham County is about to experience a heavy leadership turnover as four new members of the county commission are preparing to take over.

Longtime assistant county manager Pat Monahan is retiring early next month and county manager 70-year-old Russ Abolt is planning to retire in 2014.

Monahan said the new commission should take a cue from the current board. He said the new commissioners should immediately establish goals and figure out how they are going to achieve those goals.

The last day on the job for the 58-year-old Monahan will be Jan. 4. He became assistant county manager in 1985.

A regular marathon runner, Monahan plans to continue getting up early every morning to run and work out.
