An Army battalion tasked with training new recruits is being deactivated at Fort Benning.

The 3rd Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment, 192nd Infantry Brigade will retire its unit colors during a ceremony Monday. Three other basic training units at Fort Benning will undergo reorganization in June.

The changes are part of an effort to downsize across the Army now that the war in Iraq has ended and combat operations in Afghanistan are winding down. As a result, Fort Benning officials say they're training fewer recruits — about 96,600 this fiscal year compared to 120,000 in 2010.

The changes will shed jobs for 44 soldiers and 27 civilians. Fort Benning spokesman Gary Jones says no layoffs will be necessary and affected workers will move to other jobs.
