Homeowners in Savannah and surrounding Chatham County could see their property taxes increase to help pay for a jail expansion.

The Chatham County Commission has scheduled a public hearing Monday on its budget for fiscal year 2014.

Commissioners are expected to discuss a possible increase in the millage rate, which would result in higher property taxes across the county. One major reason a tax hike may be necessary is a need for extra staff at the county jail.

The jail is undergoing an expansion and Sheriff Al St. Lawrence says he needs to hire at least 94 new staffers to safely manage the larger space and extra inmates. The sheriff estimates the cost would be an extra $7.4 million a year.
