The Georgia Department of Agriculture has extended a quarantine period for the Savannah-Chatham animal control shelter after another dog was found with an upper respiratory illness.

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan police spokesman Julian Miller says the initial quarantine would have expired Wednesday if a new case hadn't been discovered. The shelter was quarantined May 7 after animal control staff requested an inspection. Miller says the quarantine has been extended for 14 days.

Miller says the public will have no access to the center and animal intake will be limited. Adoptions have been temporarily placed on hold.

Miller says shelter staff will sanitize the facility during the quarantine period and another Department of Agriculture inspector is scheduled to visit Friday.
