Fulton County corrections officials say they're preparing to move some inmates into cells with new locks.

County corrections spokeswoman Tracy Flanagan says new cell locks have been installed on the fifth floor of the jail, and inmates will begin moving into their new cells Thursday morning.

The $5 million lock replacement project will apply to all seven floors of the jail. Among other things, faulty cell locks were a reason why the facility has been operating under federal oversight for more than six years.

Flanagan says the project is ahead of schedule although crews had to install new wiring in some places, and make improvements to doors and walls.
