As the snow and ice started to melt away Thursday, Georgians began venturing back outside. Wesley McConnell owns Thumb’s Up, a Decatur diner that serves breakfast all day. He and several of his employees stayed in a nearby hotel so that he could keep the restaurant open throughout the storm.
A grandson of former President Jimmy Carter has announced he will run for Governor of Georgia. Jason Carter, a Democratic state Senator from Decatur, near Atlanta, filed paperwork Thursday to become Deal’s highest profile challenger. He seeks to unseat incumbent Gov. Nathan Deal at a time when Democrats hold no statewide offices in Georgia.
Missteps and gaps in care that led to the suicides of three military veterans were at the center of a hearing Wednesday in Atlanta. Veterans told of indifferent caregivers and long waits for appointments at the Atlanta Veterans’ Administration Hospital in Decatur. Two officials have since retired and several others have been reassigned.

In the first full Friday night of high school football, we wrote 35 recaps of metro Atlanta games. Led by Collins Hill’s comeback victory over Roswell in a game that was televised by GPB, there were several exciting games around Atlanta.
