Robert Herman, Executive Director of the Morton Theatre, comments on the life and legacy of Monroe Bowers "Pink" Morton, who built the Morton Theater in 1910, served as a postmaster, published two newspapers and owned 30 buildings in the Athens area. The center of Morton's empire was the Morton Building, which became the center of African-American business and entertainment in Athens at the turn of the century.

In this Spark video produced by KQED, tour John Held Jr's expansive collection of mail art, one of the most extensive in the world. For more than 25 years, Held has been collecting art sent to him through the mail, and the collection amounts to well over 30,000 pieces. He has since donated part of his collection to various art institutions, including New York's Museum of Modern Art, the J. Paul Getty Foundation and the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art, but Held still keeps much of his collection of correspondences.

In this Spark video produced by KQED, explore the method and meaning behind Anna Von Mertens's quilts that are covered with as many as 100,000 hand-sewn stitches. Anna Von Mertens's quilts are works of extraordinary depth and complexity. Composed of bold colors in broad geometric patterns, Von Mertens's quilts at first glance resemble color field paintings or minimalist sculptures. Up close, however, it becomes apparent that Von Mertens has superimposed multiple systems and layers of meaning in a single piece, merging the psychological with the geographic, the aesthetic with the scientific.

The Exotic Right in front of You: Kehinde Wiley: An Economy of Grace

Follow each step of Kehinde Wiley's process from casting models on the streets, to creating finished images. Wiley says "Sometimes the exotic can be right in front of you…the way that I have seen black people being portrayed in this country feels very strange and exotic because it has nothing to do with the life that I've lived." Here Kehinde introduces the idea that foreign images are not always from far away countries, but can be very close to home. In Kehinde’s work he does not reject or affirm societal portrayals of black people, but investigates these images as if they were foreign and asks viewers to do the same.
