This lesson begins with an activity in which students consider two plates of food: one composed of healthy choices and one composed of less healthy choices. Students then learn about the importance of nutrition, watch a video about healthy eating habits, and discuss the role of fruits and vegetables in a healthy diet. Next, students investigate snacks and learn about the difference between "everyday" and "sometimes" foods. They watch a video about how to choose healthy snacks, and then participate in an activity that challenges them to make healthy choices while preparing a plate of food for a friend. Finally, students learn about where to find both "everyday" and "sometimes" foods

Jalani Phillips, Jr. (age 10, U.S. Virgin Islands) describes the origins of his Healthy Lunchtime Challenge winning recipe for Hurricane Lentil and Salmon Patties, and his mother talks about their family’s cooking traditions, in this video from WGBH. Jalani explains why he would rather be a chef than president of the United States. After explaining why he and his mother frequently use onions in their dishes, he describes some of the cultural recipes that have inspired him to cook. His mother explains that she learned to cook at a young age and thought it was important for Jalani to learn, too.

In this Kindergarten through 5th grade activity, language and movement unite. There are two teachers who will read a command, once in Mandarin and once in English. The students listen to both languages and then perform what the command is. Students are asked to complete things such as sit down, stand up, stop and swim. This activity is great for working on psychomotor and cognitive skills.
Skill: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.

This Kindergarten through 5th grade activity puts a spin on traditional bingo. Each student gets a fitness bingo card. Finding a new partner for each exercise, students will do the exercise then sign their partner’s paper. Students will continue this until all spots have been filled. This lesson focuses on different exercises to move the whole body (psychomotor skills) as well as teamwork (affective skills).

Students are chosen to spin the Wheel of Fitness and perform the exercise shown. These movements are fun and engaging while ranging from individual, partner to group exercises that include planks, rock paper scissors while jogging and the chicken dance!
