Macon’s housing shortage is both a reflection of national trends and a unique blend of local realities.

The center will house several nonprofit organizations that offer a variety of services as well as provide a cooperation space for the community. 

While taking a trip to New Orleans in March 2019, Cooke, a mother of eight, applied for 501(c)(3) status for C-QUL, a nonprofit organization focused on reducing the barriers that prevent people from obtaining mental health care. The organization was approved in May 2019.

The boycott started with the goal of desegregating the buses and having the bus company hire Black bus drivers, and it lasted three weeks. The boycott ended with a ruling from Federal Judge W. A. Bootle ordering the desegregation of Bibb Transit Co. buses.

At the age of 51, Arthena Caston was diagnosed with the early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

Although her father and several of his siblings suffered from Alzheimer’s, she had a hard time believing her diagnosis, she said.

“You don’t want a diagnosis like that because all of a sudden, everything changes,” she said.
