Celebrate The Holidays With GPB

During this holiday season, we hope you’ll join us for some special programming. This year we’re happy to present many of your old favorites, along with a some new offerings we hope will become your favorite.
We are especially proud of our Christmas Eve night of Georgia-centric music programming featuring the Morehouse and Spelman Glee Clubs, A Grand Mercer Christmas, Augusta native Wycliffe Gordon and friends in concert, and Harry O’Donoghue’s specially selected Celtic holiday music.
Here’s the lineup:
Christmas Eve
Holiday Tinsel Tales, 9 am
Hear stories from the NPR archives that touch on the meaning of Christmas. David Sedaris , Bailey White, John Henry Faulk, and other NPR voices, past and present, tell stories of the season. This airs on all GPB Radio stations and online.
Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, 10 am – Noon
Hosted by Michael Barone, A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is a live service of Biblical readings and music (choral and organ) broadcast from the chapel of King’s College in Cambridge, England. The 30-voice King’s College Choir performs. This airs on all GPB Radio stations except 88.5 GPB Atlanta and 90.7 GPB Carrollton, which will broadcast regular programming. The Christmas Revels: In Celebration of the Winter Solstice 2015, Noon – 2pm
This musical celebration focuses on the winter holidays Christmas, the Solstice, New Year’s, and Twelfth Night. It’s an entertaining collection of traditional and ritual dances, processionals, carols and drama. The performances include sacred and secular folk music, plus some composed popular and art music from traditional European and American celebrations of Christmas, Hanukkah, the Feast of Fools, New Year’s, Hogmanay, Twelfth Night and other end-of-the-year festivals, along with various observances of the Winter solstice, some of which date back to pre-Christian times. Christmas with Morehouse and Spelman Glee Clubs, 7pm
The choirs of two of the most prestigious historically black institutions in the nation, Spelman and Morehouse, get together to present a spine-tingling concert program. This year's program features the best works of the last several years. It's a joyous celebration of the schools' tradition of singing excellence, with their trademark mixture of spirituals and carols. NPR’s Korva Coleman hosts. A Grand Mercer Christmas, 8pm
Taped in Macon at the historic Grand Opera House, the program features students and faculty from Mercer’s Townsend School of Music and its internationally renowned Robert McDuffie Center for Strings. A Grand Mercer Christmas includes classical Christmas selections and showcases exclusive new arrangements by noted Boston Pops arranger Randol Bass and Grammy Award-winner Matt Catingub. The 45-voice Mercer Singers, conducted by Dr. Stanley Roberts, and the McDuffie Center for Strings Ensemble are complemented with selections performed by Macon native, Grammy nominee and program host Robert McDuffie, as well as the McDuffie Center’s Director, former Oregon Symphony Concertmaster Amy Schwartz Moretti. The Wycliffe Gordon and Friends Holiday Concerts - My Favorite Things, 9pm
The program includes select cuts in jazz and classical genres, recorded at Christmas concerts Wycliffe Gordon staged in Augusta and New York City over the last few years. This airs on all GPB Radio stations except 88.5 GPB Atlanta. You can listen to our music service on gpb.org.
Green Island Christmas Eve Special, 10pm
On the Green Island Chrismas Eve Special, Savannah-based host Harry O’Donoghue features traditional Celtic Christmas music you won’t hear anywhere else. This airs on all GPB Radio stations except 88.5 GPB Atlanta. You can listen to our music service on gpb.org.
Christmas Day
Living on Earth: Hope For The Holidays, 9am
The special brings together Celtic and African-American tales as well as original stories on the theme of hope. You’ll hear stories from Irish bard Aine Minogue and Tennessee musicians Sparky and Rhonda Rucker. Israeli Noa Baum tells a true story that underscores the spirit of the season, that people everywhere are related as inhabitants of our planet. This airs on all GPB Radio stations. Christmas With Madrigalia 2015, Noon
The Rochester, NY chamber choir Madrigalia, and their Artistic Director Cary Ratcliff will offer a stunning performance of Serenity, when they return to public radio for Christmas with Madrigalia 2015, a holiday concert that celebrates mystery and the joy of the holiday season. Madrigalia is joined by harpist Kathleen MacAuliffe, oboist Emily Hart and bassist Kieran Hanlon. This one-hour program, recorded live in concert at Rochester’s Baptist Temple, features beautiful music by Paul Lohman, Johannes Brahms, David Conte, Michael Praetorious, Philip Stopford and Ola Gjeilo along with a number of Cary Ratcliff’s own arrangements.
A Chanticleer Christmas, 1pm
A one hour program of holiday favorites, new and old, presented live in concert by Chanticleer , the superb 12-man ensemble known as “an orchestra of voices. Holiday All Songs Considered, 3pm
All Songs Considered is home to the best new music and a community of fans always ready to share their opinions on the current music scene. For the Holiday show hosts Bob Boilen and Robin Hilton are kidnapped and taken to outer space! And there will be music too. The adventures continue. This airs on all GPB Radio stations and on gpb.org
Jazz Spot Cool Yule, 8pm – Midnight
Tis the season to be jazzed, so be sure to join GPB host Masani for Cool Yule: A Jazz Spot Holiday Special, all holiday jazz. Trust me, yule be swinging! This airs on all GPB Radio stations except 88.5 GPB Atlanta. You can listen online to our music service.
