PBS KIDS has added American Sign Language to 6 series

PBS KIDS is committed to serving all kids and families by adding American Sign Language (ASL) interpretations to six of its series, now available for free on PBS KIDS digital streaming platforms. This initiative reflects PBS KIDS’ dedication to inclusivity, empowering children to engage with content in ways that suit their individual needs, prioritizing accessibility.

ASL interpretations have been integrated into 10 episodes from shows like Alma’s Way, Arthur, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Donkey Hodie, Pinkalicious & Peterrific, and Work It Out Wombats!

The research for this project began in 2021, culminating in partnerships with organizations like GBH Kids, Fred Rogers Productions, Bridge Multimedia, and the Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP). Since PBS KIDS primarily serves children ages 2 to 8, offering ASL content is especially impactful for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Many children in this age range are not yet able to read closed captions.

In an exclusive interview with Fast Company, Sara DeWitt, senior vice president and general manager for PBS KIDS, stated, ““It’s not just three or four episodes, this is a full library. Then we’ll be able to see how kids can engage with the different approaches within the different shows, and to make sure it’s really resonating. Our hope would be that we can continue to work with these organizations and expand beyond this.”
