Tackling childhood obesity is becoming a major concern for Americans. Kids are less mobile and have hectic schedules. According to the Center of Disease Control, an estimated 17 percent of children and adolescents ages 2-19 years old are obese. This problem is becoming an epidemic in America.

Last week, First Lady Michelle Obama was here in Atlanta to talk about childhood obesity prevention and mark the first anniversary of her “Lets’s Move” program that focuses on combating childhood obesity, improving nutrition for children at home and school and increasing physical activities among school aged kids.

Georgia Public Broadcasting would like to join this movement by offering helpful information and tips on healthy eating and fun physical activities for the whole family:

Healthy Living Tips

•Put down the remote and get outside! Ride a bike, play kickball or fly a kite.
•Trade chips and cookies for carrot sticks and granola bars
•Plant a garden filled with healthy herbs and tasty vegetables
•Pick a day of the week to have a “Family Fun Day” out. Go rolling skating or climb Stone Mountain. Make a day of it and have fun!

Ants on a Log

Ingredients
•5 stalks celery
•1/2 cup peanut butter (creamy)
•1/4 cup golden raisins
Directions
Wash and cut the celery stalks in half. Spread with peanut butter on celery stalks. Then, sprinkle with plump raisins and enjoy!
