Miller Grove More Than Just Hoops
Primary Content
There were shock waves felt throughout the state Saturday night, and it wasn’t the relief of Georgia fans after Connor Norman recovered a Kentucky onside kick to preserve the Bulldogs’ narrow win in Lexington. Miller Grove, known mostly for its basketball program, upset Class AAAAA No. 2 Stephenson 33-29 in an eye-opening performance at Panthersville Stadium in southern DeKalb County. Wolverines quarterback Ken Allen threw four TD passes, including one midway through the fourth quarter to Xavier Hopkins for the final margin of victory. The Jaguars have been a perennial playoff team in Class AAAAA for years while Miller Grove is still in search of its first postseason appearance. The Wolverines can’t celebrate too long, however, as they face No. 7 Tucker Friday, while Stephenson will look to right the ship against its arch rival, No. 3 M.L. King.
After three years of football and a total of seven wins, Langston Hughes has taken off in 2012. The Panthers, out of Fairburn, are 6-1 and looking for more in their fourth year of existence. Hughes beat traditional-power and region rival Newnan Friday night 34-14 in a bit of an upset as Keion Davis had 149 yards and two TDs on the ground. The Panthers host East Coweta Friday for sole possession of first place in Region 3-AAAAAA.
Many left North Oconee for dead after a humbling 50-14 loss to St. Pius X in the season-opener. But the Titans have won six straight since, including a dramatic 27-26 win over Elbert County Friday night in the Granite Bowl. Coach Terry Tuley’s squad is now tied with Hart County for the Region 8-AAA lead with three games to play, including the season finale against the Bulldogs.
Coach Ed Koester has done a phenomenal job at South Cobb. The Eagles (6-1) are on the brink of a third straight playoff appearance after a 26-21 win at Harrison. Koester’s squad is tied for second place in Region 4-AAAAAA with Marietta, a team the Eagles will host Friday. Win that one and the No. 2 seed from Region 4 is theirs to lose.
