What Wins? Better Offense Or Better Defense
Primary Content
That is the age-old question in football. One that has no definitive answer. You see people’s opinions on the subject swing back-and-forth like a pendulum when it comes to hiring coaches. Some schools want an offensive-minded head coach because their program needs more offense. The very next time the same program needs another new coach their opinion might have changed and now they want a defensive-minded coach. The reason for the vacillation? There is no right answer to the question above.
We will once again try to answer that question Friday night on GPB when the Colquitt County Packers play the Mill Creek Hawks in the GHSA AAAAAA Semi-Finals. The Packers are the highest scoring offense in the history of this state. Colquitt County has scored 618 points this season for an average of 49.6 points-per-game. In their three playoff games alone, the Packers have scored 159 points for an average of 53 per game. Remember we’re talking football here, not basketball!
It’s a big reason why Colquitt County is ranked number-three in the country, are defending state champions, have won 28 straight games and have at the very least advanced to the state semi-finals seven consecutive seasons.
The latest team that will try to stop them will be Mill Creek. The Hawks are 13-0 for the first time in program history and have reached the semi-finals for the first time as well. They’ve done it with a stifling defense. We saw it firsthand last Friday night when Mill Creek suffocated 2014 state finalist Archer 23-0. That was a Tigers team loaded with big-time Division-1 prospects and averaging 40 ppg.
The Hawks defensive numbers are nearly as mindboggling as the Packers offensive numbers. Mill Creek has surrendered just 88 points all season (or the equivalent of three halves of football for Colquitt County in this season’s playoffs). The Hawks breakdown includes allowing just 6.8 ppg and only 24 yards rushing per game, along with 63 quarterback sacks and 31 takeaways.
So you decide. What is better a great offense or a great defense? I suggest you tune-in to GPB Friday night at 7:00 p.m. to review the evidence and about 10:30 p.m. give us your answer.
