When it comes to Georgia High School Football, fans love to talk about the top running backs this state has produced.  Right at the top, with very few arguments is Herschel Walker who played his high school football at Johnson County High School  for a coach named Gary Phillips who went on to become the head of the GHSA.

And the Peach State has produced many other talented ball  carriers like Washaun Ealey from ECI who scored a Georgia high school record 133 career touchdowns.  Or Monte Williams of Commerce High School who rushed for 8,844 yards in his career,  or Devyn Collins of Pepperell High School who rushed for 485 yards in a single game.  In 2000, Daccus Turman of Washington-Wilkes rushed for 3,172 yards in a single season, running down the record held by Herschel Walker of 3,167.  In between you have guys like Garrison Hearst, Darius Walker, Nick Chubb and a bunch of other very talented tailbacks.

In 2016, the top running back listed by most of the top recruiting gurus is Trey Sermon of Sprayberry High School.  “Trey has a very unique skill set”, says Sprayberry coach Billy Shackelford. “He combines power, speed, and vision and can run and catch the football making him a many faceted and multi-purpose threat for our offense.”

Trey is a soft spoken young man, but still one of the team’s leaders. “I can get very vocal, I am always encouraging my teammates to work harder and get better”, says Trey. “Trey leads by example. He is a hard worker. He strives to do his job the best he can every day and every play.,” says the Coach.

Last season ended early for Trey.  He played in just four games rushing for over 500 yards when he suffered a back injury.  Fortunately he did not need surgery,  just rest.  So as Trey Sermon rolls into his senior season, he is rested and ready to help Sprayberry have a big year.  He even plays defense. “ I like playing defense. I play the safety position and it’s fun to cover people.” I wondered if he ever got tired playing both ways on the gridiron.  “No to really,  I run track, so I am in good shape year round.”

As for next year,  Trey will take his skills to Norman, Oklahoma to play for the Sooners. “ It was the best fit for me.  I liked the coaches and it reminded me of home.”

As for being ranked the number one running back in the state…..his coach agrees.  “As for the number one back, I like my guy. He is pretty dog gone special. It is very rare you see a back this talented and I look forward to working with him and helping him have a great senior season.”

This article is by no means is meant to put any additional  pressure on this talented tailback.  I just want to point out to high school football  fans, who will be fun to follow and watch this upcoming season.  Obviously with all the colleges pursuing Trey and Oklahoma winning that recruiting race the talent factor is clearly there.  That Trey is coming back from an injury that sidelined him for six  games last season  gives us an extra reason to pull for him.  And the fact that he is a team leader and a good guy and student just adds to that list.

So I am not preaching to the choir,  but I like this guy, so keep your eyes out for Trey Sermon,  the top rated tailback in Georgia.
