The GHSA state championships for football are right around the corner. There are 16 teams left on the road to the Georgia Dome and by late Saturday night all eight champions for 2016 will be crowned. GPB Sports is looking forward to broadcasting all eight games. For us it’s a little like Christmas, a little like New Years, and a little like a birthday celebration. We will kick off our coverage each day at 10:00 am, so feel free to have breakfast at the championships with us both days. Friday’s lineup looks like this: 10:00 am Single A Private Fellowship Christian vs ELCA 1pm. Class 3A GAC vs Cedar Grove 4:30 Class 5A Rome vs Buford 8:00 Class 6A Tucker vs Valdosta What a great four games to begin with. Both single A Private schools are undefeated with picture perfect 13-0 records. GAC has one of the top quarterbacks in the entire country in Davis Mills while Cedar Grove has a pair of offensive lineman, Netori Johnson and Justin Shaffer who have committed to play next year at the University of Georgia. The Class 5A game is a battle of Wolves as the Rome Wolves look for their first ever GHSA state title and the Buford Wolves go for their 12th. And the 6A game, the two time state champion Tucker Tigers tackling the most storied program in Georgia history if not the entire country in Valdosta. The Wildcats have won 24 state championships and 6 mythical national titles. AND THAT IS JUST FRIDAY! On Saturday the lineup is as follows: 10:00 am Single A Public McIntosh County Academy vs Macon County 1pm Class 2A Benedictine vs Fitzgerald 4:30 pm Class 4A Cartersville vs Thomson 8:00 pm Class 7A Roswell vs Grayson MCA had to battle not only the opposition but the hurricane to make it to the finals. Macon County is looking for its first GHSA championship since 1996, Benedictine is unbeaten, ranked number one and battled a real hurricane earlier in the year. The Cadets will play the Purple Hurricane of Fitzgerald led by running back J.D. King and looking for its first title since 1948. The 4A game matches up top ranked, undefeated and defending champion Cartersville with 14-0 Thomson looking for the sixth state title in school history. And the first ever Class 7A game will matchup undefeated Roswell who played for the title a year ago, with top ranked Grayson, a team loaded with blue chippers. We will turn on the power at 10:00 am Friday and bring you close to 28 hours of GHSA state championship football action. For us here at GPB Sports it’s a labor of love.
