Top Stories and Arms Race: Week 6
Primary Content
By Brooks Burns
Get ready high school football fans because week six is filled with more exciting matchups! Colquitt County looks to bounce back from its first loss of the season when they battle 1-3 Valdosta. Colquitt, ranked 5th according to GPB poll, lost big to Brookwood last week. The Packers and Coach Rush Propst are still dealing with a host of injuries to several of its key players including senior standout QB Steven Krajewski.
The Archer Tigers will travel to Roswell to take on the Hornets for the GPB “Cigna Game of The Week.” The undefeated Tigers will look to continue their dominance. Roswell is 1-2 and are trying to turn their season around and still make the playoffs. It will be a very tough matchup for them this week. Another matchup to keep an eye on this week is Harrison at Allatoona. Harrison, who was led by their 5-star dual-threat QB Justin Fields, will travel to Buccaneer Stadium for an important game for both squads.
Week six of the season means that team rankings will start to take on more significance. How a team is ranked at the end of the season will help to decide who gets home-field advantage in the playoffs and who plays who. Teams like Carrollton who are undefeated and ranked in the top 10 of their class are sitting in a very good position. If the Trojans can secure a couple more victories in their region they should be able to secure a spot in the playoffs fairly soon. On the other hand teams like Harrison who have already lost two games are hoping they can string a couple of victories together and get some help. They may have to win out.
Right now, Harrison is ranked fourth in the region behind Allatoona, Sequoyah, and Dalton. The concern for Hoya fans is that so far, Harrison has yet to play any of these teams. This starts when they battle Allatoona. The other thing to consider is that the Hoyas remaining region games are on the road and are scheduled late in the season.
Stay tuned. It will be exciting to watch.
Uneventful…
That’s how many fans would likely describe the Arms Race this week, but I would disagree. Almost all the state’s top-ranked QBs were not in action because of injury or because their teams had a bye week. The brightest stars of the week are two Elite 11 finalists: Harrison’s Justin Fields and Heard County’s Emory Jones. Both QBs were able to lead their teams to big victories.
