Regular Season Ending ... Playoffs Just Ahead
Primary Content
It’s hard to believe, but the 2018 Prep Football regular season will end this coming weekend and then the playoffs will get underway on November 9-10. There were some surprises this past weekend, but for the most part, all remaining region playoff positions will be decided this coming weekend or by a few mini-games early next week.
In some of the top games last weekend, top-ranked Colquitt County (9-0), blew past Tift County in Region 1-7A play, 45-7, to set up a showdown with the Lowndes Vikings (9-1) in Moultrie this Friday night. Lowndes slipped by region foe Camden County, 28-27, to keep the region race wide open until the conclusion of the regular season this Friday night.
This week, it’s Tift County (6-3) at Camden County (6-3) in the other region 1-7A key game matchups. The Blue Devils are 1-1, in region play, while Camden County is 0-2. Both games in the South Georgia region this week are huge, since only three teams from the four-team region will make the playoffs. Statewide Power Rankings will decide team number 32 in the Class 7-A playoffs again this year.
Other games of note this past weekend saw Class 6A Allatoona down Dalton, 27-14. Class 4A Blessed Trinity edged Marist 10-7. Mary Persons rolled past Perry, 40-3, and Pierce County (9-0) edged Appling County 27-26 in overtime.
As the end of regular season approaches, there are top-notch games on the agenda this weekend. Most games played will have playoff implications in all classifications. In Class 5A, Troup (9-0) travels to Cartersville (9-0) for a region title showdown. In Region 1-6A, Lee County travels to Douglas to play Coffee (7-2). Lee County has captured the Region 1-6A title, and Coffee is playing for a playoff position.
Roswell (8-1) is at Etowah (4-5) in Class 7A, and in Class 6A, Northside-Warner Robins plays at 2-7 Houston County. Class 5A matchups of note this week include Stockbridge (8-1) at Jones County (8-1), Bainbridge (4-5) at Thomas County Central (5-4), Veterans (8-1) and Warner Robins (8-1) meet in the same division for a Region 1-5A title, and Ware County (7-2) plays Wayne County (9-0) for the Region 2-5A title in Jesup.
In Class 4A, Stephens County (5-4) plays St. Pius X (8-1), while in Class 3A, Liberty County (7-2) plays unbeaten Pierce County (9-0) in Blackshear.
Class 2A’s top matchup finds Dublin (8-1) at Washington County (8-1) in a Region 3 title game. Another key 2A game finds Early County (6-3) at Thomasville (5-4) in a battle for the No. 3 seed in Region 1-2A.
Class A’s top game finds Mitchell County (8-1) at unbeaten Pelham (9-0) in Region 1-Class A.
The GPB-TV game of the week this week finds 7A powers Lowndes at Colquitt County in Moultrie. The All-Access pass begins at 7 p.m. and the kickoff starts the action at 7:30 p.m.
