Olivia Cochran scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead No. 1-ranked Carver-Columbus to a 56-44 win over No. 4 Spalding in the Class 4A girls championship game on Friday at the Macon Coliseum.

The win ensured the Tigers of an undefeated season and their first state championship. They finished second in 2017.

Cochran, coming off a 29-point effort in the semifinal round, was 5-for-13 from the floor and added two assists, two steals and two blocks. 

Carver (32-0) also got 13 points and 14 rebounds from Jailyn Shaw, 11 points from Kionna Gaines and 10 points from Sadrea Mabry. 

Spalding (24-6) was led by Corriana Evans with 21 points and 18 rebounds. Aniaya Jester added 12 points and six rebounds. 

It was Spalding’s first appearance in the state championship. The Jaguars, who play an aggressive style of defense, ran aground of foul trouble early. One starter fouled out and two others played substantial time with four fouls.

Carver led most of the first half, although Spalding closed to within two points late in the first half before the Tigers had a 32-28 lead at the break. Carver’s defense was dominant in the third period when it outscored Spalding 11-2 to take command.
