There is a new No. 1 team in Class 6A in this week’s GPB Football Rankings.

Lee County jumped over defending state champion Buford to take over the top spot after the Wolves were blanked 7-0 by Chaminade-Madonna of Hollywood, Fla. Lee County hammered Lithia Springs 64-14 and improved to 5-0. Buford and Lithia Springs met in the state championship game in 2020.

“Both those teams are so good,” said GPB voter Steve Graham. “It would not surprise me to see them play for the state championship again.”

Lee County will have its hands full this week when they travel to play Warner Robins, the No. 1 team in Class 5A.

There were several new teams who impressed the voters and jumped into the rankings this week. Teams moving in were: Grayson is No. 9 and Newton is No. 10 in Class 7A; Kennesaw Mountain is No. 9 and Valdosta is No. 10 in Class 6A; Hart County is No. 10 in Class 3A; Putnam County is No. 10 in Class 2A; and Charlton County is No. 9 and Montgomery County is No. 10 in Class A Private.

“I added Newton to my 7A list after their big win at McEachern last Friday,” GPB’s Sam Crenshaw said. “It makes their Week 1 win over Langston Hughes even bigger.”

There was no movement in Class 5A and Class 4A.

“This is the first time this season that I really didn’t have a lot of movement in my Top 10s,” GPB’s Jon Nelson said. “As we get into region play across the board, this is when things stabilize for me. If there’s a shocking loss, then I’ll drop teams either a few spots or out entirely. Obviously with a lot of teams in off-week in Class 4A, there won’t be any hopscotching from teams below the top three.”
