There are two new No. 1 teams in this week’s GPB Football rankings, with North Oconee (Class 4A) and Fitzgerald (Class 2A) taking over the pole position in their respective classifications.

North Oconee (1-0) did not play last week. The Titans knocked off rival Oconee County in the first week and supplanted Benedictine at the top of the Class 4A poll. Benedictine lost to Christopher Columbus (Fla.) 41-15 last week.

Fitzgerald (2-0) blew away Turner County 57-6 last week and moved ahead of previous No. 1 Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy, which lost to Class 6A Blessed Trinity 37-14. Fitzgerald won the state championship a year ago.

Neither team was a unanimous choice in their classification. Benedictine got a first-place vote, despite its loss, and Whitewater drew the No. 1 vote from GPB play-by-play announcer and voter Matt Stewart.

“The reason I had Whitewater at No. 3 and in position to move up to No. 1 is the Wildcats have the top-ranked senior recruiting class in 4A led by 4-star Raul 'PoPo' Aguirre, who is the No. 10 ranked linebacker in the nation and committed to Miami,” Stewart said. “Whitewater also has 6-4, 320-pound, 3-Star senior defensive lineman Stephen Jackson, who is committed to Arkansas, and 6-2, 220, senior linebacker Paul Snellings, who has been an under-the-radar prospect but recorded 97 tackles last season and is drawing interest from Georgia."
