Recruiting 2022: Brookwood at Collins Hill
Primary Content
Join us Friday night for Week 3 of our 2022 GPB Sports High School Football TV schedule as the Brookwood Broncos and Defending Class 7A champion and fourth-ranked Collins Hill Eagles renew their 27-year rivalry.
Coverage starts at 7 p.m. ET with Recruiting 2022 including the “Top Prospects to Watch” in this game, followed by the Football Fridays in Georgia Game of the Week at 7:30.
Collins Hill is more than eight months removed from the first football state championship in program history and one of the most impressive seasons ever in GHSA history. Led by two of the greatest players ever to come out of Georgia -- 5-Star CB/WR Travis Hunter who was the No. 1 prospect in the nation and 4-Star QB Sam Horn -- the Eagles did something that had not been done since the 1971 Valdosta Wildcats.
Collins Hill did not just go 15-0 on the way to winning the 7A title they beat every opponent by at least 15 points, including Milton 24-8 in the state championship game. No team had done that in the state’s highest classification in 51 years.
A week later Hunter would pull the greatest National Signing Day stunner ever when he changed his mind on a close to two-year commitment to Florida State and instead signed with Jackson State and Coach Deion Sanders. Horn signed with Missouri, where he dressed for his first collegiate game with the Tigers last night, but did not play.
That same week, the Eagles would play and lose to Washington state’s Graham-Kapowsin 40-36 in Geico State Champions Bowl Series in Las Vegas but Collins Hill’s place in Georgia history had been set.
Fast forward to this season and with just three returning starters on offense and two on defense, the Eagles are 1-0 and coming off a bye week after defeating Virginia’s No. 1 ranked Division One team Life Christian 20-0 in the season-opening Freedom Bowl at Milton.
Collins Hill is once again loaded with talent and with a sophomore and freshman class that will make the Eagles state championship contenders -- if not this year, certainly in the near few to come.
Brookwood is 1-1 after beginning the year with an impressive 28-24 come-from-behind victory over Norcross in the Corky Kell Classic at Mercedes-Benz Stadium followed by a 34-20 home loss to Walton in Week 2.
That is the same Walton team that stunned the Broncos 52-35 in the 2021 quarterfinals. That was a disappointing season’s end for that Brookwood team that enjoyed its best season since reaching the 2017 state semifinals. But the 2022 Broncos have a lot of promise led by the state’s top-ranked QB Dylan Lonergan. We’ll take a deeper dive on him below.
This will be the 15th all-time meeting in this Gwinnett Country rivalry and while the Broncos lead the series 11-3 dating back to 1996, the Eagles have won the last two, including a 36-10 win in the 2021 Corky Kell Classic.
That’s the preview. Let’s take a look at the Top Prospects to Watch in tonight’s game:
Brookwood Broncos
4-Star QB Dylan Lonergan - The 6-2, 215-pound, senior is the No. 9 ranked QB in the country. Committed to Alabama in July over 25 other offers including his other two finalists South Carolina and Stanford. Georgia and Ohio State were also in the mix.
Lonergan has thrown for more than 6,500 yards in his career, with 59 TD passes and just 10 interceptions. He’s also a very physical runner as one of the strongest players on the Broncos team and has rushed for over 1100 yards in his career with 20 TD on the ground.
Baseball is big for Dylan as well and he is planning on pitching for the Crimson Tide – if he is not picked high in the MLB Draft which is a strong possibility with his 94 MPH fastball. Most people believe it would take a first-round pick to keep Lonergan from playing college football and baseball in Tuscaloosa.
3-Star LB Malcolm McCain - 6-1, 220-pound, senior – Committed to Miami Ohio in June over 11 other offers including Georgia State. You might remember he was one of our Make That Kid an Offer nominees just last week.
McCain is looking for a Power 5 offer and Coach Philip Jones says the only thing that’s holding him back is his height. A second-year starter for the Broncos with over 100 career tackles, 5 TFL and 4 QB Sacks.
McCain was Brookwood’s Defensive Player of the Game in last week’s loss to Walton after recording 11 solo tackles the week before in the win over Norcross.
LB Jordan Davenport - 5-10, 215-pound, senior offered by Morehead State. Unfortunately, we won’t see Davenport tonight. He suffered a broken ankle in the loss to Walton and underwent surgery this week. The Broncos are hoping to get him back in 4-6 weeks.
That’s a big loss for Brookwood. Jordan is a four-year starter who Coach Jones says knows the defense better than the coaching staff.
Collins Hill Eagles
3-Star SAF Jayden Davis - 6-2, 180-pound, senior – Committed to Louisville over 14 other offers including Georgia Tech and NC State. With the departure of Hunter, Davis might be the most dynamic player on the 2023 version of the Eagles.
Coach Lenny Gregory says that Jayden is doing some “Travis-like” things on offense and is the “Travis” of this year’s team. Like Hunter he starts both ways and he is a three-year starter at safety. He has right at 150 career tackles and 6 INT.
3-Star LB Dion Crawford - 6-2, 220-pound, senior has 12 offers including Georgia Tech, Arkansas, and Tennessee. Max Preps All-American, 7A First Team All-State and Gwinnett Touchdown Club OLB of the Year last season as a junior he recorded 22.5 TFL and 13.5 QB Sacks. The third-year starter is building some impressive career numbers and has over 220 all-time stops with 30 sacks and 48-plus TFL.
The Eagles tinkered with Crawford at the Will linebacker spot during preseason but got him back on the edge starting at Jack, where he was so devastating for Collins Hill last season.
Freshman DL Deuce Geralds – Not going to lie. I am stoked to see the 6-2, 260-pound, ninth grader who already has 14 Offers including Georgia Tech, Tennessee, and Michigan. As someone who was there for Robert Nkimdeche’s first varsity start as a sophomore at Grayson I am excited to see Geralds in his second varsity start.
Deuce had 3 QB sacks in the Eagles’ season opener and that was a game that was shortened to 2.5 quarters because of weather.
The connection to Nkimdeche and Geralds is Coach Gregory coached both of them and says Deuce is farther ahead at this point in his career and predicts he could end-up the No. 1 prospect in the country by the time he’s a senior.
Katrell Webb – 6-4, 250, Freshman OL – Offered by Ole Miss, Louisville, and UCF.
T.J. Wilcox – 6-3, 185, Sophomore QB – Offered by Georgia Tech. He is the backup QB that Coach Gregory says has an NFL-strong arm.
C.J. Hector – 5-10, 180, Sophomore WR/CB – Offered by Louisville
Isaiah Richardson – 6-5, 205, Senior WR/LB – Offered by Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois
T.K. Lanier – 6-2, 275, Senior OL – Offered by Morehouse and Anderson and also receiving interest from Georgia State and Coastal Carolina.
Michael Sheehan – 6-1, 185, Senior QB – Offered by Reinhardt. Starting QB and tonight will be his second varsity start.
