The high school football season begins this weekend and GPB Sports will be there with one of the most anticipated games when mighty Buford travels to play Milton on Friday at the Eagles Nest.

Kickoff on GPB is 7:30 p.m.

Milton went 13-2 last season and beat Walton in the championship game. The Eagles, ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, are led by quarterback Luke Nickell, who threw for 3,914 yards and 39 touchdowns and only five interceptions in 2023. He has committed to Miami.

The Eagles also feature wide receiver C.J. Wiley (Florida State), tight end Ethan Barbour (Georgia), defensive lineman Caleb Bell (Arkansas), defensive backs Dylan Lewis (Tennessee), Ty Redmond and kicker Alex Nover – all of them preseason all-state players.

Buford is the consensus No. 1 team in Class 6A. The Wolves were 11-2 last season and were upset by Grayson in the third round of the playoffs.

The Wolves return preseason all-state players Brayden Jacobs (Clemson) on the offensive line and linebacker Jadon Perlotte (Southern Cal). Other veterans on the stout defense include cornerback Devin Williams, linebacker Kenyon Rivera and defensive linemen Bryce Perry-Wright and Nico Maggio.

The two teams haven’t played since 2019 when Buford prevailed 26-23. Milton leads the series 4-1, but the other games were played in 1982-83 and 1952-53.
