Week 6: Five games to watch
Primary Content
Longtime rivals Mays and Creekside have enjoyed a long, competitive relationship on the football field. The two teams have met 20 times, with each one winning 10. Even though Creekside has been a state power of late and reached the championship game last year, the last two contests have been decided by a point.
The intrigue will be ramped up on Friday when they compete in Fairburn on this week’s GPB Football Fridays in Georgia broadcast.
Creekside (1-2, 1-0) got its first win of the season last week by routing Forest Park 65-0. Coach Maurice Dixon’s team had lost their first two games to nationally ranked out-of-state teams.
Mays (3-1, 1-0) defeated Pace Academy 13-3 on Friday in the Region 4-4A opener. Coach Reggie Austin’s Raiders have beaten Stephenson and Douglass but lost to Hughes.
Here are four other top games around the state to watch this week:
Blessed Trinity at Hebron Christian: Should be a good contest between a pair of ranked teams. Class 4A No. 6 Blessed Trinity held its own with mighty Milton on Friday and will have its hands full with Class 2A No. 2 Hebron Christian. The game matches Hebron’s offense, which averages 39.7 points, against the stingy Blessed Trinity defense.
Chattahoochee at Milton: The two unbeaten North Fulton teams in the Class 6A Region 7 opener for both sides. Chattahoochee is 4-0 after beating rival and previously unbeaten Centennial last week. Milton (4-0) is ranked No. 1 in Class 6A and ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation behind quarterback Luke Nickel. The two teams haven’t played since 2009.
Harlem at West Laurens: This game could help determine the champion in Region 4-3A. West Laurens (4-0, 2-0) is coming off a 44-28 win over Cross Creek. Harlem (4-0, 1-0) is hot after a 17-14 victory over Baldwin. This will be the first all-time meeting between the two schools.
North Oconee at East Forsyth: A share of first place in Region 8-4A will be on the line when these two 4-0 teams collide. North Oconee, ranked No. 5, is coming off an emphatic 35-0 win over Class 3A No. 2 Jefferson. East Forsyth whipped Chestatee 34-7. North Oconee has won the first two meetings.
