Augusta National, Masters Week, a celebration of spring in the South. Over the course of the last 89 years, the tournament has evolved into one of the greatest sporting events in the world.

The massive television ratings, the conga line of private jets, the unending hustle of ticket chasing, and the harvest of merchandise.

Masters beer can cooler ($10) anyone?

The Masters Tournament, at Augusta National was conceptualized and created by the forever cool Atlantan, the incomparable Bobby Jones.

Mr. Jones died in 1971, but never seems far away, his footsteps are everywhere around here, those who knew the celebrated attorney with Georgia Tech, Emory roots are still with us.

Already this Masters Week, I’ve read dozens of stories online about the great man’s impactful Georgia life.

Let me contribute one too.

787 Springdale Road, is a Frederick Law Olmsted (NYC Central Park designer) design in Historic Druid Hills.

On June 17th, 1924 Robert Tyre Jones married Mary Rice Malone, in this home owned by the bride’s parents.

The wedding took place at 8:30pm outside, in the back.

Dr. Ann Critz (Neonatal-Perinatal) and Dr. Frank Critz (Radiation Oncologist) purchased the property in 1976, and raised their four children here.

“Mary was Catholic, Bobby was not, so a church wedding was out,” relayed Dr. Frank Critz, “it was to occur right here, and it did.”

Father James Horton of Sacred Heart Catholic Church (downtown Atlanta) performed the ceremony. The maid of honor was Katherine Haverty (Haverty Furniture) and the best man, Richard Garlington.

“They were childhood sweethearts who would stay together through the best and worst that life had to offer,” said Dr. Bob Jones IV, the grandson of Mary Rice Malone and Bobby Jones, “every now and then, when I think I’ve seen everything related to my grandparents, there is something new to discover.”

Tulips on the Springdale property bloom about the time azaleas flower at Augusta National.

“The Critz’s have planted 20,000 tulip bulbs, the property is always part of the Druid Hills Tour of Homes with Plein Aire artists stationed in front clutching their easels.”
