Let Me Root, Root, Root for Georgia Icons!
Primary Content
The first episode of Iconic America features Fenway Park. Baseball is a favorite American pastime and obsession, and no ballpark is more iconic than Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox. This episode tells the story of a city’s loyalty to its team and love for its ballpark through thick and thin. The series premieres Wednesday, April 26 at 9pm!
Sure Boston has Fenway Park, but Georgia is home to some all-time great athletes and other fantastic sports highlights. What better time to mention our first official icon: Henry “Hammerin’ Hank” Aaron? Aaron broke Babe Ruth's all-time home run record in 1974 — a once-unimaginable baseball feat — and held the record for more than three decades. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1982, having finished his career with 755 home runs. Although the stadium where he got his 715th home run—breaking Ruth’s record—was torn down, the part of the wall still exists! You can visit it and learn a little more about Georgia’s connection to baseball. Mr. Aaron passed away in 2021, but Georgia will always remember his iconic legacy.

You may be just starting to get in the mood for peanuts and Cracker Jacks, but don’t forget about the sport that fills our fall days: football. We rate football as its own icon in Georgia because from high school to college to the pros, Georgians from Athens to Mill Creek can all agree that fall is better with Friday night lights and tailgating. We are even the site for the College Football Hall of Fame. A worthy place to visit to embrace the Georgia icon that is football.
This post can end here with us all agreeing that Georgia’s sports are iconic. But we’d also like to mention one more: The Master’s. This first golf major of the year is always held in Augusta, unlike the others that move around. The tradition of the green jacket, the difficulty of getting tickets, and the famous Champions’ Meal, chosen by the defending champion, all make The Master’s a Georgia icon.
