Rex Evans was born with music in his blood. Raised by an award-winning musician mother, Rex was exposed to the scene at an early age. But, he was reluctant to start his own musical journey until recently.

Peach Jam Podcast features stories and songs recorded live in our GPB studios from a variety of incredibly talented and diverse bands and artists who call the Peach State home.

Rex Evans on Peach Jam

Rex Evans: Okay. I'm Rex Evans. I'm from Newnan, Ga., south of Atlanta. I make like a soulful R&B, soulful hip hop music. You know.

Jeremy Powell: I actually — I don't know. So when you say soulful R&B, soulful hip hop, what is that, in your brain?

Rex Evans: In my brain its just, you know, the classic, you know, in the South there is a sound that we kind of stick to; it's kind of 808s and and a lot of synths and stuff like that. But with me, I have like a soulful voice and I have a soulful message. So like, whenever I'm making music, I like to blend the two. So hip hop, R&B and a little bit of soul. So I just like that that feeling, you know what I'm saying? It gets you going.

Rex Evans: The music has always been a part of my life. My mom being Debra Killings, a bassist, writer, vocalist for a lot of legendary Atlanta groups, musicians and everything you can be a part of in Atlanta growing up. So I was always around music, so it's just been embedded in me since a child. So I always say I've been doing music or at least thinking about music since I was born.

Jeremy Powell: You mentioned your mom. I mean, she was — she sang backup for TLC, and she's been on Outkast recordings and Monica and all kinds of stuff, plus doing her own music.

Rex Evans: Mm hmm.

Jeremy Powell: She was here with you today playing bass?

Rex Evans: Yeah.

Jeremy Powell: What's it like performing with your mom right there?

Rex Evans: Man, its — its calming, you know what I'm saying? So it's like any time you're in a stressful or hard situation, like you call for your mama if you if you're going to call for somebody, you know what I'm saying. You call your mama up, talk to Mom. She'll usually call you down. And just being able to turn around and see her right there playing, smiling back at me, you know what I'm saying? It just kind of mellows you out. So there's actually, like, a soothing feeling. It really is. So it's good to have her around 100%.

Jeremy Powell: So you said that the for you music started about six years ago, but you've been around it because your mom obviously that it's her — her life and the way she makes money and earns a living.

Rex Evans: Mm hmm.

Jeremy Powell: Why did it take you so long to decide that you wanted to be a musician?

Rex Evans: I think I was a bit of a rebel. Just, you know, wanting to go the other way. I was playing sports. I was doing some other stuff in high school, you know, just trying to be around and have fun. And everybody around me started doing music ... and I always just rebelled. We even had a studio at the house. They would always try to come over and record. I'm like, "man, I'm not trying to do none of that. Y'all trying to go play some football outside or something?" And then eventually they kind of convinced me. One day I went to a studio session with a friend of mine who was like, "Get on the track." So I got on. And its been history ever since, like it just kind of naturally came out. It flowed through me. It's in my blood. So I don't know what made me not want to do it then, but I wish I had started way earlier, I really do.
