The Rack, from Atlanta, plays hard and heavy rock n roll. Signed to Punk Black Records, an organization founded to highlight people of color in the rock music scene, The Rack is breaking down barriers with their sound. The Peach Jam Podcast features stories and songs recorded live in our GPB studios from a variety of incredibly talented and diverse bands and artists who call the Peach State home.
Atlanta’s own The Rack has arrived — and they’re here to shake up the rock scene. On the latest episode of Peach Jam Podcast, this powerhouse quartet sits down with host Jeremy Powell to talk about their journey, representation in rock music, and the drive that keeps them pushing forward.
Formed in 2019 as a cover band, The Rack — featuring bassist Carlos Laquanous, lead singer Awleen Knight, guitarist Jonathan Lee, and drummer Russell Dennie — has evolved into a full-force, high-energy band that blends hard rock with danceable pop elements. Their sound is heavy, their stage presence is electric, and their story is one of resilience and passion.

Redefining Representation in Rock
In a music scene that has historically gatekept diversity, The Rack is a proud part of the movement to amplify people of color in rock. Signed to Punk Black Records — a label dedicated to supporting BIPOC artists in alternative music — the band is actively breaking down industry barriers.
Knight, who grew up in Georgia, recalls facing skepticism about her place in rock music. “People look at me and expect R&B,” she shares in the interview. “I’ve been called an R&B artist way too many times. But I love screaming, I love rock, and this is what I was always meant to do.”

With a blend of operatic vocals, heavy guitar riffs, and a unique personal style (complete with cat ears and “demonic big stompers”), Knight commands the stage in a way that demands attention.
From Small Gigs to Explosive Performances
The Rack’s journey hasn’t been easy. As they discuss on the podcast, getting gigs as a rock band of color in Atlanta wasn’t always simple. But thanks in part to their label Punk Black, their movement in the scene has shifted.
“There’s so much talent in this city,” says Carlos. “It used to feel really closed off, but now there’s room for all kinds of artists to be heard.”
And The Rack has certainly been heard. Their performances — from intimate local venues to major festivals — have drawn dedicated fans. One of their wildest experiences? An entire crowd in Jacksonville dropping to their knees in unison as Knight performed a cover of Sober by Tool. “It was surreal,” she recalls. “Like they were bowing or something. It was kind of creepy, but also really humbling.”
Merch, Road Trips, and The Reality of Indie Music
Like many independent bands, The Rack knows the hustle. In this Peach Jam Podcast episode, they dive into the challenges of making a living as musicians. “We’re basically T-shirt salesmen who happen to play music,” jokes Jonathan.
Touring often means barely breaking even, with merch sales covering gas and food costs. “People think, ‘Oh, you got booked in Miami, that’s huge!’” Knight laughs. “But really, we just made enough to get there.”
Their advice to up-and-coming artists? Reinvest in yourself. Keep pushing, keep playing, and never underestimate the power of a dedicated fanbase.
From heartfelt stories to behind-the-scenes laughs, The Rack’s episode of Peach Jam Podcast is one you won’t want to miss. Whether you’re a longtime rock fan or just discovering this band, their energy and passion are undeniable.
