Just because the golf crowd is gone doesn’t mean there’s not still plenty of Arts & Culture events in Augusta! Here are some of the highlights, courtesy of GPB-Augusta’s team of interns from Augusta University: Alexandria Bennett, Haley Harris, and Jamie Sapp.
(Thu 04/14): Mommy and Me
April Showers “Mommy and Me: April Showers” is at the Morris Museum of Art in downtown Augusta Thursday morning at 10. It’s an opportunity to listen to Eric Carle’s children’s story Little Cloud, while viewing Henry Tanner’s artwork Georgia Landscape. Afterwards, participants can create a rain stick with their family and friends. Additional info at TheMorris.Org.
(Thu 04/14): Reception with Southern Exposure
This Thursday evening at 6, Aiken Center for the Arts hosts a gallery opening reception for “Southern Exposure,” an exhibit featuring the works of 12 artists from South Carolina. It includes ceramics, printmaking, drawing, photography, and other disciplines. The center is located at 122 Laurens Street SW in Aiken. More details at aikencenterforthearts.org.
(Fri 04/15-16): Jim Witter “Time In A Bottle”
Folk hits from the 60’s and 70’s include songs such as “Cats In The Cradle” and “American Pie”. You can re-live this time period as Jim Witter performs covers of classic hits in his show, “Time In A Bottle” Friday and Saturday at 7:30. The concert is at the Center For Performing Arts on Newberry Street in downtown Aiken. More information at apagonline.org.
(Sat 04/16): Take Back The Day 5K
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Augusta is supporting the cause with multiple events throughout the month. Saturday is the 7th annual “Take Back The Day 5K”. The 5K is for walkers or runners and is all downhill starting at the Augusta University Summerville campus. Registration starts at 7:30. More information is available at RapeCrisisAugusta.Org.
(Sat 04/16): Oral Walk
The Student National Dental Association at Augusta University is hosting their “Oral Cancer 5K” Saturday morning at 9. It starts at Riverview Park in North Augusta. This event strives to create awareness of oral cancer and educate the public about the importance of prevention, screenings and early detection. 40% of the proceeds are donated to the Oral Cancer Foundation. (Sat 4/16): Earth Day Augusta
This Saturday from 10am to 3pm, Phinizy Swamp Natural Park, Augusta University and The City of Augusta present “Earth Day Augusta”. It’s a celebration for protecting the environment. The event includes music, walks, bike tours, and educational sessions. It’s at the park, 1828 Lock and Dam Road. More details at phinizycenter.org.
(Sat 04/16): The Futurist Adam Trent
A dancing, singing and magical show is coming this weekend! Adam Trent is known for his fascinating illusions and charming wit as he dazzles the audience with his magic show and stand up comedy. The show starts at 7:30 at the J.S. Hardin Performing Arts Center on Evans Town Center Blvd in Evans. More information and ticket prices at augustaamusements.com.
(Sat 4/16): Students Caught in the Act
This Saturday evening at 7:30, the “Students Caught in the Act” talent showcase takes place in Maxwell Theatre on Augusta University’s Summerville Campus. It’s presented by the AU’s Department of Communications. The acts may include some strong language and adult content. More details at calendar.augusta.edu
(Sat 04/16): Ballet 422 Screening
Augusta Ballet presents a film screening of “Ballet 422” Saturday at 4pm. It takes place at the Snelling Center on Washington Rd. Ballet 422 documents the making of New York City Ballet’s 44nd original work. Soloist and choreographer Justin Peck designed the ballet, working closely with the cast and orchestra to bring it to life. Details at augustaballet.org.
(Tue 04/19): Widespread Panic It’s always great to see Georgia talent making it big. One example of that is the rock band, “Widespread Panic”. Originally from Athens, Ga., the band is now touring across the U.S. and even holds records for most sold-out performances. They are performing at the James Brown Arena in downtown Augusta Tuesday at 7. More information at augustaentertainmentcomplex.com.
