(Sun – Thu 7/10-14) Young golfers are in town demonstrating their skills. It’s the 5th annual “Vaughn Taylor Championship” at Jones Creek Golf Club in Columbia County, featuring hundreds of the world’s top junior golfers. The final round is Thursday. (Mon 7/11) This week in Augusta, an historic lecture at a local brewery. Monday evening at 6:30, its “History on Tap” at The Aiken Brewing Company. Dr. Tom Mack is set to discuss "The Hidden History of Aiken County”. Admission includes the presentation and an appetizer buffet. The Aiken Brewing Company is located at 1450 Laurens Street in Aiken. (Thu 7/14) The 20th season of The North Augusta Arts Council Music in the Park Series continues at The Verrandah in Maude Endenfield Park, located at 495 Brookside Avenue. (Fri 7/15) A local drama group is presenting the play, “Freud’s Last Session”. Set in 1939, the play chronicles the battle of wits and ideologies between the father of psychoanalysis--and committed atheist--Sigmund Freud, and devout young Anglican, C.S. Lewis in the days leading up to England’s entrance into World War II. The first of five performances takes place Friday evening at The Aiken Community Playhouse, 126 Newberry Street in Aiken. (Fri – Sun 7/15-17) Some of the world’s fastest boats are coming to town for one of the world’s richest Drag Boat Races. It’s the 2016 Augusta Southern Nationals, downtown on The Savannah River this Friday through Sunday. In addition to the boats screaming across the water at speeds exceeding 240 miles per hour, the event includes post-race activities in the downtown area. (Sat 7/16) New this Summer for kids of all ages (and adults) it’s 4-H YOGA--every 3rd Saturday of the month from 9 to 9:30am at Phinizy Swamp near the education buildings. The classes are low pressure, relaxing and fun, and no experience is required. Yoga’s benefits can include improved concentration, listening skills and overall self-esteem. (Sat 7/16) Fun and games in film format this Saturday morning at the Imperial Theatre. It’s a screening of the award-winning “Jumanji” starring Robin Williams and featuring a magical board game, ill-mannered monkeys and stampeding rhinos. Part of the Imperial’s free Summer Family Fun Film Series, the show starts at 10am. All children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Tix and info at imperialtheatre.com
(Sat 7/16) A Small Film with a Big Smile premieres this Saturday at the Imperial Theatre. It’s the world premiere of “Happy, the Documentary”--based on the life of Visual Artist and Augustan Leonard "Porkchop" Zimmerman and his HAPPY campaign. It’s the story of one man's transformational journey through the storm, and his desire to share the sunshine he found on the other side. (Sat 7/16) This Saturday night at 8, blue suede shoes are the perfect attire as Elvis entertains Evans. Actually, it’s world champion Elvis tribute artist David Lee, on stage at the Hardin Performing Arts Center on Evans Towne Center Boulevard. Crowned the ULTIMATE Elvis by Elvis Presley Enterprises in 2015, Lee has been in the Elvis Entertainment Business for over 20 years, devoting his time and talents to honoring The King. (Sun 7/17) This weekend, it’s time for R&B and bluegrass in downtown Augusta at The Morris Museum. Augusta’s own Bethany and the Southside Boys perform standards and originals from the 60s and beyond as Sunday’s featured guests at the “Music at the Morris” series of free summertime shows. Showtime is 2pm. The museum is located at 10th and Reynolds, at Augusta’s Riverwalk. More info at themorris.org
