(Mon 7/18) The Hopelands Summer Concert Series, presented by The City of Aiken Parks, Recreation & Tourism Department, continues on The Windham Performing Arts Stage. Tonight, it’s the Mike Frost Band. Show time is 7pm and admission is free. Blankets, lawn chairs and picnic baskets are welcome! Hopelands Gardens is located off Whiskey Road in Aiken. (Tue 7/19) The Augusta Mini Theatre hosts their 7th annual Sunshine’s Roast and Toast tonight at 7pm, benefiting the theatre’s Mariah McKee Butler Memorial College Book Scholarship Fund. This year’s “honoree slash victim” is former Georgia Senate Majority Leader Charles W. Walker. The event takes place in the parish hall at The Church of The Good Shepherd on Walton Way in Augusta. (Tue 07/19) Oklahoma! is coming to Augusta this fall—and here’s a chance to be a part of the Augusta Players performance of this Broadway blockbuster musical. Auditions take place tomorrow and again on July 26th at 7pm at the Augusta Ballet School at 2941 Walton Way. (Fri & Sat 7/22+23) The Greater Augusta Youth Theatre presents the play, “Nice Work if You Can Get It”, Friday and Saturday evening at 7:30 at Grovetown High School. A wealthy aristocrat, a female bootlegger, and a family of prohibitionists in town for a wedding are among the characters in this drama set in the 1920’s. (Thu 07/21) This Thursday, it’s a jazzy season finale for North Augusta’s FREE Music in the Park Season with the big sound of ABBA—the Augusta Big Band Aggregate. Augusta University’s Dr. Rob Foster leads the 18-piece ensemble in thrilling performances of compositions and arrangements from early swing to funk and even rock. Showtime: 7pm at North Augusta’s Maude Edenfield Park on E. Buena Vista Avenue. More info at naartscouncil.org
(Thu 07/21) Tomorrow night at Reed Creek Nature Park and Interpretive Center, you can learn about our six-legged friends as part of the Park’s “Nocturnal Thursdays” series. From 8-9pm, “Interesting insects” are the focus of an evening walk under the stars. The location is 3820 Park Lane in Martinez, off of Fury’s Ferry Road across from West Lake. (Fri 7/22) The Morris Museum’s “Art at Lunch” series continues Friday at noon with a presentation about Architect Charles Blaney Cluskey. Mathew Davis, Director of the old Governor’s Mansion in Milledgeville, Georgia’s antebellum state capital, discusses the architectural connection between the mansion and the old Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. (Sat 7/23) Garden City Jazz presents July’s Jazz & Wine Soiree and Jam Session. It takes place Saturday evening at The Jessye Norman School of The Arts, 739 Greene Street in Downtown Augusta. Show time is 7:30pm. This time around the featured artist is The Travis Shaw Trio, performing Orenette Coleman compositions. That’s followed by an open jam session for jazz musicians—all presented with state-of-the-art sound and lighting in a beautiful, historic building. (Sun 07/24) This Sunday, it’s time for more Candlelight Jazz downtown at the Augusta Common—with featured guests Preston & Weston joined by the Lady in Red, vocalist Sandra Simmons. Both Wayne Preston and David Weston are multi-instrumentalists who’ve played with James Brown, each with roots in religious music. Add Sandra’s sultry vocals, and the sound is phenomenal. (Mon 07/25) Coming Monday evening to the FREE Hopelands Gardens Concert Series, it’s the music of “Southern Meltdown. Don’t worry! The music doesn’t start ‘til 7, so the only sizzling going on should be the sound of classic Country and Southern rock. You can bring a lawn chair and a picnic dinner, but alcohol is strictly prohibited. The Gardens are located at 135 Dupree Place in Aiken. Rain location is the Weeks Center just down Whiskey Road.
