Breaking the News Screening and Discussion
Join us for a screening of Breaking the News about Women and LGBTQ+ journalists launching the startup The 19th* to buck a broken news media system. In collaboration with The Reg Murphy Center for Collaborative Journalism.
6 p.m.
Who decides which stories get told? A scrappy group of women and LGBTQ+ journalists buck the white male-dominated status quo, banding together to launch The 19th*, a digital news startup aiming to combat misinformation. A story of an America in flux, and the voices often left out of the narrative, the documentary Breaking the News shows change doesn’t come easy.
After the screening, there will be a panel discussion including:
- Sofi Gratas, Reporter with GPB
- Tanya Ott, Assistant Professor of Journalism and Journalist in Residence at Mercer University
- Tracie Powell, Founder of The Pivot Fund
- Keith Reed, Editor, Capital B News
- Moderated by Liz Jarvis Fabian, Civic Journalism Senior Fellow at Mercer University

Our groundbreaking collaboration has students, faculty and veteran journalists working together in a joint newsroom.
