Who says math doesn't apply to real life? Certainly not us! We drop in on Georgia jobs that are driven by mathematics on an everyday basis - from running the ports and railways that move goods into, out of, and around the state, to organizing airport runways that move us across the country. We even visit people who keep a watchful eye on the movement of money throughout Georgia's economy, measuring amounts and monitoring prices. And speaking of measuring, every wonder how they figure out the volume of water moving through a river on any given day? Math can definitely help explain that, but we may get a little wet in the process!

We pay a visit to the CSX REDI Center in midtown Atlanta, where we talk with the fine folks of CSX about their 3,000 employees scattered around the state. REDI is the acronym for Railroad Education and Development Institute. That’s where most CSX employees come to learn about what it takes to work on the railroad, which also makes it a great place for us to learn more about CSX jobs.

There’s a lot to know about Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Sure, it’s the busiest airport in the world. And yes, it’s within a two-hour flight of 80% of the U.S. population. But perhaps the most important characteristic of this “airport city” is that it’s the biggest employer in the state with 58,000 jobs!

We go to McCaysville to meet a group a people who claim their jobs are “better than your vacation.” They’re river guides at Rolling Thunder River Company, a white water rafting company where the employees, surprisingly, still use math to do those jobs. They also use a host of certifications to ensure customer safety. Oh, and being an Eagle Scout doesn’t hurt either.
