The Georgia Department of Transportation says it overreacted to a weather statement from the National Weather Service when it posted winter storm warnings on large message boards over metro Atlanta interstates.

GDOT removed the messages from the boards this morning, and apologized for any confusion they may have caused.

In a statement released Thursday morning, the department said the overreaction was a result of the “desire to proactively inform the travelling public of potential hazardous road conditions.”

GDOT says it will give additional information once the state is closer to the time of a storm and it has “current and confirmed information.”

The National Weather Service is forecasting some precipitation and potential for black ice on the roadways Thursday night.
