Macon’s famous soul food restaurant is back. After closing its doors a year ago, the H&H reopened Wednesday.

In the 1970s, the restaurant became known as a place where up-and-coming bands like the Allman Brothers could get a plate of soul food for cheap. “Mama" Louise Hudson first opened H&H in 1959 and had been serving up plates of love and soul food until the she ran into financial trouble.

Late last year, the iconic Macon landmark shuttered its doors. But help came in March when the Moonhanger Group, owners of downtown's Rookery and Dovetail restaurants, announced it was purchasing the restaurant.

“A lot of people come from out of town just to come here because they are big Allman Brothers fans,” said Roger Riddle of the Moonhanger Group. “ They want to see where Capricorn Records was, they want to go to the Big House Museum and they want to eat at H&H so it’s an important part of why people come to town.”

Mama Louise, who is in her 80s, is still a part of the restaurant, although she won’t cook every day.
