Merging Macon Cities To Select New Mayor In Runoff

Two small Georgia cities in southeast Georgia will be merging in 2015, and residents this week will decide who serves as the first mayor of McRae-Helena.

WMAZ-TV in Macon reports local voters will return to the polls Tuesday for a runoff election between mayoral candidates David Neal and Mike Young.

Young is the current mayor of Helena, while Neal served 14 years on the city council of neighboring McRae. The two Telfair County cities, and their governments, will merge under the name McRae-Helena on Jan. 1.

Young and Neal were the top vote-getters in a four-way mayoral election last month. They finished just 58 votes apart and neither received more than 50 percent, forcing a runoff. Young says whoever wins will play a role in "starting history all over" for the communities.
