Two Chatham County Deputies On Leave After Inmate Death
Primary Content
The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is placing two deputies on administrative leave following the death of an inmate in the county’s detention center last week.
22-year-old Matthew Ajibade died in an isolation cell after his arrest on January 1.
In a news release Thursday, Chatham County Sheriff’s officials say Corporal Maxine Evans and Corporal Jason Kenny are on paid leave for “inappropriate actions” in the incident.
Ajibade was arrested on domestic violence charges following a fight with his girlfriend. Chatham County officials say he was found-non-responsive after he “became combative” during the booking process. Three officers were injured during the struggle.
Meanwhile, the Ajibade family has hired attorney Mark O’Mara who represented George Zimmerman in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin. Family members have told reporters that the Savannah Technical College student suffered from bipolar disorder.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the incident. Both deputies will remain on leave until the investigation is completed.
