Atlanta Plane Train

A major upgrade is being planned for the "plane train," which moves passengers between terminals at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the goal of the $25 million upgrade is to reduce the time the train is not moving due to outages.

Airport General Manager Miguel Southwell said the train has been breaking down increasingly over the years.

Authorities say the train is 34 years old, and has not had a major overhaul since it began service in 1980 at what is now the world's busiest airport.

The work is expected to take two and a half years, with work done at night between 1:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. while the system is normally shut down.
