The Atlanta Journal-Constitution recently released their findings in a massive investigation of thousands of doctors across the country. Reporters discovered that a disturbing number of medical professionals are sexually abusing their patients with little or no repercussions. Over 2,400 doctors nationwide were cited in the AJC’s investigation, including several prominent cases here in Georgia. We sit down with two members of the investigation team, Carrie Teegardin and Jeff Ernsthausen, to discuss the findings and how we may need to reexamine the power dynamic between doctors and patients.
Then, the new film “Swiss Army Man” tells the story of a shipwrecked man who befriends a corpse. The soundtrack was composed by Andy Hull and Robert McDowell. They're part of the Atlanta-indie rock band Manchester Orchestra and join us to add two more tunes to our Georgia Playlist. Then, one in four adults in the U.S. deals with a mental health disorder each year and the National Alliance on Mental Health reports that more than half of them didn't receive treatment last year. Telepsychiatry hopes to bridge that gap. It connects psychiatrists and patients directly through phone and video calls. Dale Peeples is an Associate Professor of Child Adolescent Psychiatry at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University. He joins us to talk about how this kind of virtual treatment works.
Plus, a Walk Through The CDC’s History: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were created in Atlanta to fight malaria and other deadly illnesses around the world. The agency celebrates its 70th birthday this month and we start the celebration with a trip to the CDC Museum to learn more about its storied history.
